A can or 2 is fine and is safe but diet soda is actually worse than regular soda.

You should not exceed 200mg of caffeine a day. A can of Coke for example only has 35 mg so you can have 2 cans and a choclate bar and be fine.

Diet drinks are packed with artificial sweeteners like aspartamane. There has been so many studies on this in the past about it being bad for everyone, pariculary children and unborn babies.

I remember that my dad used to actually use aspartamane to preserve maggots when he was fishing! And it has been linked to cancer forming.

Actually diet soda contains phenylalanine and high amounts of it is known to cause mental retardation in children. I don't drink diet soda for this reason, although I'm not sure if it can cause damage to an unborn child or not. As with regular soda, it's better to cut it down to maybe one a day or even go caffeine free. Good luck!

i can't believe all this misleading information! diet soda is bad for you even if you're not pregnant! so of course it's not "ok" for an unborn child. not that it would damage the baby for sure, but anyone that's pregnant should try to be as healthy as possible.

Eh, if you're going to have soda, it's not that much "better" to do diet. It's not the caffeine, it's the artificial sweeteners that are the problem. However, if it's sweetened with aspartame, it doesn't cross through the placenta so it's "ok" for pregnancy. That's the only kind of soda I'm allowed now because of gestational diabetes but soda is soda so my doctor still suggests only in moderation, if at all.

I don't know any definite amounts just reduce until you're off. If you don't have any problems with blood sugar, drink normal soda. Even though aspartame doesn't cross over to the baby, it's bad for YOU. Worse than regular soda sweeteners (corn syrup).

yes its fine, but do limit the amount you drink, diet ones contain the same amount of caffeine as non diet ones the calories are less not the caffeine!!! about 2-3 cans a day will be the limit really! try not to have any coffee or tea as well, if you do then take a can off!

Hiya
Yeah, the caffeine is the main problem here, i would imagine that the diet versions still have the caffeine as it would just be the sugar that is reduced.

I have a page on my website which tells you how much caffeine you should have when pregnant, you are allowed a little bit. Please have a look.

I have heard that the carbon(carbonation process) takes several days to get out of you body. The caffeine is the same in each type. As for the fake sweetener, don't know. Check with your doctor. It would probable depend on how much you drink per day. All the best(MOM). Have a great week
